Social life increasingly gets navigated? shunted? online and funneled into algorithmic silos, and instead of fostering the compassion and tolerance needed for a diverse, civil society, we get hot takes and zingers replacing the complexities of real relationships and thoughts with nuance and depth. It’s as if the dominant mode of social interaction is to be like a drunken sports fan at a play-off game. Everyone has already chosen their sides and is screaming their slogans. And the dominant emotion seems to be contempt for others. I take comfort in the fact that I know so many people who think very differently from me but we still have mutual civility and respect and do things together. Also, I don’t follow them online 😸
